Marana Police Arrest Suspect in In-N-Out Shooting

Marana, AZ — On September 28, 2026, at approximately 2:52 p.m., Marana Police Department officers were dispatched to the In-N-Out located at 8180 N. Cortaro Road for a welfare check.

While officers were responding to the call, other Marana Police officers were in the area investigating an unrelated incident when they heard multiple gunshots coming from the direction of In-N-Out. The officers immediately responded to the location.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed that a shooting had occurred and located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers also observed a male suspect, later identified as Charles Whipple, pointing a firearm at the victim, who was lying on the ground near his vehicle.

Officers quickly detained Whipple without incident and provided first aid to the victim. The victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Through witness interviews and a review of surveillance footage, investigators determined the incident began while the victim’s vehicle was stopped in the drive-through lane for an extended period. Whipple approached the victim, who shortly after proceeded forward through the drive-through. Whipple crossed the parking lot to the end of the drive-through lane, where the victim had stopped again.

As the victim began driving through the parking lot, Whipple fired three rounds toward the driver’s side window. One round or fragment of a round struck the victim. After the victim stopped the vehicle, Whipple approached him, ordered him out of the vehicle at gunpoint and directed him to the ground. The victim remained on the ground until officers arrived moments later.

Based on the investigation, Charles Whipple was arrested and booked on charges of Attempted Homicide in the Second Degree and Endangerment.

The investigation remains ongoing.
