Political Signs

Seeing political signs around Marana and wondering what is allowed?

The FAQs below explain where signs may be placed, when they must be removed, and how to report a sign placement or safety concern.

Why am I seeing political signs around Marana?

Political signs are allowed during election season and are regulated by Arizona state law. For the 2026 Primary Election, political signs may be placed in Marana’s public right-of-way beginning May 11, 2026.

Signs for candidates who do not advance to the General Election must be removed by August 5, 2026. Signs for candidates who advance to the General Election must be removed by November 18, 2026

Where are political signs allowed?

Political signs may be placed in the Town’s public right-of-way, but not on Town property. Town property includes property owned by the Town and used for government purposes, such as the Marana Municipal Complex or Marana Aquatic & Recreation Center.

Political signs may also be placed on private property, but only with the property owner’s permission.

What rules do political signs have to follow?

There is no limit on the number of signs a candidate or committee may place during the election cycle, but state law does include restrictions on sign size.

Signs must be properly secured in the ground and may not be attached to guardrails, signal devices, telephone poles, light poles, or street signs.

Political signs must include the name and telephone number or website address of the candidate or campaign committee contact person.

When should I report a political sign concern?

Please contact the Town if a political sign creates a safety concern, blocks visibility, interferes with ADA access, is attached to a pole or street sign, or is located on Town property by emailing codeenforcement@maranaaz.gov.

A helpful report includes the nearest cross streets, which side of the road the sign is on, a description of the concern, and a photo if available.

Will the Town remove a sign if I report it?

Not always. If a sign is improperly placed but does not create an immediate safety concern, the Town will notify the candidate or campaign committee and give them 24 hours to relocate the sign before removal.

If a sign impairs traffic visibility or creates a safety hazard, the Town may remove it immediately and notify the candidate or campaign committee contact person within 24 hours.

Can I remove or damage a political sign myself?

No. It is a criminal misdemeanor offense to unlawfully remove or deface a political sign. If you have a concern about a sign, please report it to codeenforcement@maranaaz.gov rather than removing or altering it yourself.
