UPDATE: The Loop near El Rio Preserve back open

Closure of portion of the Chuck Huckelberry Loop

UPDATE 12/16/2022: The portion of The Loop near the El Rio Preserve that was shut down for construction is now back open for the public to enjoy.

MARANA- A small part of the Chuck Huckelberry Loop near the El Rio Preserve will be temporarily shut down for construction work on December 14th and 15th.

According to Pima County, The work is part of the Continental Ranch Regional Pump Station Force Main Augmentation Project.

Pima County’s Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department contracted with Borderland Construction to install a new dual 24-inch pipe from the Continental Ranch Regional Pump Station (CRRPS), which will ultimately tie into the completed segment south of Crossroads at Silverbell District Park between Cortaro and Ina Roads.

Trenching work for the pipe installation is already underway.

WHAT TO EXPECT: A section of The Loop near the El Rio Preserve will be impacted while the contractor intalls pipe across the pathway on Wednesday, December 14th and Thursday, December 15th. The impacted section is located along the south side of the El Rio Preserve just north of the Continental Ranch Regional Pump Station. (closure detailed in the map above.)

Trenching activities will continue eastward to the area of the new Santa Cruz River bank-protection near the El Rio Preserve, then head southward toward Twin Peaks Road. Pima County urges you to prepare for extensive construction work during this phase of the project. Construction of this phase is scheduled for mid-December of this year through mid-May 2023.

  • Residents whose properties back up to the Loop should expect weekday construction activity – generally from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • As work continues southward, portions of the Loop will be closed to all pedestrian and bicycle traffic. These Loop closures are expected to begin in January 2023.

Emergency access will be provided.

When the project is finished, it will provide seven miles of a new dual force main sewer system between the Continental Ranch Regional Pump Station and the Tres Rios Water Reclamation Facility. People using The Loop will also be able to enjoy a newly paved pathway from the El Rio Preserve area to Cortaro Road.
