TRAFFIC UPDATE: Plan for overnight eastbound I-10 lane restrictions between Ina and Ruthrauff roads beginning tonight

UPDATED APRIL 17, 2023: This alert reflects the date changes for the lane restrictions and traffic shift.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for overnight eastbound lane restrictions on Interstate 10 between Ina and Ruthrauff roads in Tucson beginning at 9 p.m.Monday, April 17, and ending at 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, as crews shift traffic from mainline I-10 to the frontage road.

During the lane restrictions, motorists can expect:

  • Eastbound mainline I-10 traffic to be reduced to one lane between Ina and Ruthrauff roads

  • The speed limits will be reduced to 45 mph

  • A 14-foot vehicle width restriction to be in place

Beginning Tuesday, April 18, eastbound mainline I-10 traffic will be on the frontage roads between Ina and Ruthrauff roads. Three lanes of traffic will be available during daytime hours.

The traffic shift will remain in effect until late 2024. Access to all businesses will be maintained during construction.

Motorists should plan for delays, proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.

PUBLISHED APRIL 4, 2023: - A project by the Arizona Department of Transportation will bring some traffic restrictions to an I-10 interchange in the Town of Marana.

The Interstate 10 and Orange Grove interchange will be close beginning at 5 a.m. on April 5, 2023. Only westbound exits will be allowed. According to ADOT, all businesses within the work zone will still be accessible. According to ADOT, the closure is expected to be in place until late 2024.

You are encouraged to use an alternate route while this construction is underway.

ADOT will be reconstructing the Orange Grove Road traffic interchange to include providing additional vertical clearance under I-10.

This is part of a project with the Federal Highway Administration to improve safety and traffic flow on Interstate 10 between the Ina Road and Ruthrauff Road interchanges in Tucson. A Pima County project to extend Sunset Road between I-10 and River Road will be underway at the same time.

From ADOT:

The eastbound ramps and the westbound entrance ramp at Orange Grove will be closed for nearly the duration of the project.  Access to CalPortland will be maintained during construction. The westbound exit ramp to Orange Grove Road will generally be open, but there will be at least one extended closure.

The Orange Grove Road interchange closure is required for a $171 million Arizona Department of Transportation project to improve the safety and traffic flow on a 4-mile section of I-10, in part by adding a fourth traffic lane in each direction and adding lanes to the exit and entrance ramps at the Orange Grove and Sunset roads interchanges. Once the project is completed in late 2025, I-10 will carry four lanes of traffic from 22nd Street to Ina Road.

The I-10 Reconstruction Project is expected to be finished at the end of 2025.
