Last week, Town of Marana won the national Savvy Award from the City-County Communications and Marketing Association in the category of “Marketing and Tools - Marketing Event.” The award recognizes the design materials and outreach for the Marana Cape Chase Adaptive Fun Run, created entirely in-house by the Communications Division staff of the Town Manager’s Office.

“The graphics are some of the most intentional and well executed I've seen (government or private sector) in a while. The images of the real participants mirrors the event graphics in a way that illustrates that the intended message was clearly conveyed,” judges remarked.

The Cape Chase Adaptive Fun Run event was the first of its kind in the Marana community, and the Communications staff took inspiration from the superhero theme to illustrate original characters who represent a variety of special needs while showing their challenges as strengths. The brand aesthetic pulls inspiration from traditional comic book design elements. The characters were illustrated by hand with pencil and ink, scanned, and then digitally painted by former Communications Specialist Brad Allis. The art was then applied to a campaign design by Graphic Designer Ramon Armenta.

The City-County Communications & Marketing Association announced the 2019 winners of its national Savvy Awards Competition during a ceremony at the Hilton Denver City Center - Denver, CO on Thursday, Sept. 5.
